The Star SP-200 is one of the printers I have. If your printer is printing random characters, it sounds like the baud rate or something like that is wrong. I use Star's driver but my own experience is that the Star printers are more difficult to setup. I like the Generic Text driver but that only works with Windows 2000 and XP on our software.
